My Top 10 of 2007
I have been putting off compiling my year-end list for 2007 because of the fact I had not seen a number of films I’d categorized as “must-sees” (and it’s a good thing I waited…one of them made the final cut!).
My list is as follows:
1. Grind House
2. No Country for Old Men
3. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
4. The Darjeeling Limited
5. Into the Wild
6. There Will Be Blood (The “Late Arrival” to the list)
7. Atonement
8. Zodiac
9. Away From Her
10. Eastern Promises
I suppose the one that might raise the most eyebrows is my putting Grind House in the #1 slot. For me, Grind House was the best experience I had in a movie house last year. I struggled with this one for some time (I am a huge fan of No Country for Old Men, and it was a hard decision to drop it to #2), but in the end I felt the need to give due credit to Messrs. Tarantino and Rodriguez for creating a work this entertaining. It was a bold move putting out a movie like that (and, if box office receipts are to judge, I guess it wasn’t an entirely successful venture), and I, for one, enjoyed the hell out of it.

The family of Jesse James have posted their own 5 page review of this movie on their family web site, together with stories about the James family’s former experiences with Hollywood and Jesse James movies.

Great list Dave. Grindhouse is also the #1 experience I had in the theater this year. SO much fun.
It’s really hard to argue anyone’s list this year since there are about 40 movies that are “eligible”.

Indeed a great list! I’m thrilled to see Eastern Promises on your list and I agree that Grindhouse was not only the best experience I had in the theater last year, it was easily the best experience I’ve had in a couple of years!
Thinking back on it, that should probably have played a bigger part in making my top 10 but it was such a strong year, there were bound to be a bunch of things that didn’t make my list.
