Weekly DVD Pick - Battle Warrior
I’m trying something different for this week’s DVD pick. This movie does not even seem to have an IMDB record. Here is a synopsis I found over at lovefilm.com:
Tony Jaa (star of the critically Ong-Bak & Warrior King) is the leader of the Panter Squad - a group of martial arts madmen employed by a notorious General and Cartel kingpin on the border of Thailand and The Golden Triangle. They have kidnapped a noted Explorer who has been searching for an ancient priceless artefact that the General is desperate to find and profit from.
A team of ruthless mercenaries leads a crack team to free the Explorer, crush the General and Jaa’s deadly Panther squad. But before doing so they must overcome the fearsome Black Goblins and the crazed Kung Fu Zombies.
Battle Warrior is packed with crazy martial arts from start to finish, and with Tony Jaa, features one of cinema’s greatest ever action stars.
The DVD cover says Tony Jaa returns but when I check out Wikipedia I found out that this movie is actually back from in 1996. I’m guessing its going to end up being similar to some of Jackie Chan’s older stuff. It probably won’t be worth watching for the story at all. What I’m hoping is that it is worth checking out simply to watch Tony Jaa move. I’m a big fan of his stunt and martial arts work. That alone makes it worth checking out.
I can’t really tell you if the movie is good or terrible since I haven’t seen it but still going by his previous (or to be more exact later) releases you’ll get some amazing fight and stunt choreography. Once I have seen it I’ll let everyone know but if you are a fan like me I’m sure you’ll be tracking this R1 release down now that its easily available.
The following clip is from Ong-Bak and other bits not Battle Warrior but it shows you just why you should check Tony Jaa out.
Also on a side note, if you live in Canada I’ve seen both Ong-Bak and The Protector bundled together as a single package at HMV in the two for $30.00 section. That means you get both of these fun movies for $7.50 each. I can say that they are definitely worth the purchase.
