Upcoming Fincher Movies

Jonathan over at Cinema Fusion posted some interesting news about one of my favourite directors, David Fincher. It seems that Fincher is teaming back up with Brad Pitt to make another movie. The movie is called The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I guess this probably isn’t news to some of you since the movie is actually already in post production but it somehow stayed under my radar. The basic plot revolves around a man who starts to age in reverse once he hits 50 years old. When he has returned to the age of 30 he meets and falls in love. In addition to Brad Pitt the movie also stars Cate Blanchett, Julia Ormond and Tilda Swinton. This sounds like quite the departure for Fincher and I’m really looking forward to this.

I guess I should mention that Jonathan’s post really wasn’t about Benjamin Button but was actually about Fincher directing an adaptation of a French graphic novel titled The Killer. Jonathan has a pretty good write up about the Killer and some comparisons to other movies. Its definitely worth checking out the post.

And finally all this checking up on Fincher lead me to IMDB where I discovered that he is also set to direct a movie version of Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama. This is one of those classics of science fiction. I’ve never read the book but the I’ve heard about it and the story sounds quite interesting. It is going to be one of those hard science fiction type movies in the lines of Solyaris, Sunshine and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Rama isn’t due out till 2009.

Fincher is definitely keeping himself busy and he has some really interesting projects coming up.

Seems like there isn’t going to be anythign curious about The Curious Case … I feel like I have already watched the movie from the basic plot description.

Even a great director is going to struggle with a predictable story.

Emil, what does this sound like to you? It sounds like a fairly unique idea to me and I can think of no other film - at least of the top of my head - that has used this concept or one similar to it.

As far as Rendezvous with Rama, I wouldn’t hold your breath. Last I heard was that it was being put on the back burner, at least for now. Sad face.

Rendevous With Rama is a great book, but after I, Robot and some awful Philip K. Dick adaptations, I don’t hold out much hope for a movie classic adapted from a sci-fi novel.

If I Am Legend turns out to be bad, I will lose all hope.

I am Legend is going to be the typical Wil Smith tripe. It will have lots of action without any real thought behind it.

I’ve read the original I am Legend and it really ticks me off that they are going to turn it into a Wi Smith action flick.

    Agree 100%, John.
