Posters from Comic-Con
FirstShowing just posted a bunch of posters from Comic-Con. I’ve seen most of these in the recent days but I figured I’d chime in with some comments on both the movies and the posters. Each of the posters is available in a larger version at FirstShowing.

The hype for this movie seems to be fading a bit. Things were flying out at a pretty crazy pace after the trailer first appeared before The Transformers. Its now almost a month later and we still do not know the title. We know its a monster movie, we know it takes place in New York and we know that at least part of it is filmed with hand cameras. I’m definitely interested to see how this movie turns out but I think the hype is going to continue to fade and that the movie itself will never meet up with the initial hype.
I sort of like the poster. It pretty much doesn’t tell us anything that we didn’t already know from the trailer, there is a monster of some sort, it goes on a rampage and the Statue of Liberty has its head knocked off. There have been a few copies of this poster floating around with words on top. One of them had the word “MONSTROUS” written above the statue. It was speculated that it was the title but no one seems to be mentioning that any more so I guess its not the title.

I’m sorry but as much as I enjoy Kevin Bacon as an actor I am just not really interested in a movie that looks like every other revenge flick since Death Wish. Who knows maybe I’m wrong and it will be a good movie but I’m holding off on really considering watching this until I hear some reviews.
The poster is quite dramatic and really stands out with the black white and red but I’m still not interested, sorry.

I’ve yet to see a Neil Marshall movie that I have not really enjoyed. Dog Soldiers was a fun campy horror movie and The Descent is one of my favourite horrors of all time for the sense of claustrophobia that it creates. While I may have my misgivings about the fact that it sure does sound a lot like 28 Days Later and there have been and continue to be an over abundance of apocolyptic movies happening I will give it the benefit of the doubt.
Unfotunately the posters do not really do anything for me other than the one with Malcolm McDowell in and thats just because it has McDowell in not because of how it looks. Since we haven’t seen much yet about this movie I can not really think how they could be improved. Perhaps I’m being a bit harsh though because I just looked at the poster for the Spirit which looks like a Sin City poster which is done in black, white and red and also the previous mentioned Death Sentence. Maybe I’m just biased because they are all using the same colour palette.

So after saying I didn’t really like the previous posters because of the colour palette I am going to have to eat my words. I love this poster. It is just too creepy. If it was just Depp in the chair looking like he does I would love this poster but what really makes me love it is the entire room including the creepy picture in the background.
Other than it being a Tim Burton movie starring Johnny Depp I do not really know much about it. I think I’m going to have to make some time and do some web searching.

Pathology is the new movie by the guys who created Crank. Other than the fact that its a horror flick and stars Milo Ventimiglia from Heroes and is about a group of med students who dare each other to commit the perfect murder we don’t know too much. Alyssa Milano is in it and so are a bunch of beautiful young stars. I just have this feeling that this movie is going to come and go and be nowhere near as good or as interesting as Crank.
The first few times I saw a poster where objects or people are combined into the shape of a skull I thought it was kind of cool. Unfortunately, its been over done now and I’m just not a fan of this poster. If you want to see how to do it well check out the poster for The Descent.

Its the new Star Trek movie. This might be good or it might be bad its way to early to tell. As long as they really do go with a reboot where the characters actually are changed up a bit I’m interested. If it is just a younger version of the same exact characters with different actors then my interest has dropped off drastically.
The poster is pretty cool in its simplicity though. Its pretty close to the original font but not exactly the same and really everyone (whether they like it or not) will recognize the font and the name and thats enough for now. I’m hoping the next posters shake things up a bit just to point out that this is indeed something new and different and not just the same Star Trek from before.

I’m currently reading the comic (graphic novel) right now and I have to say that its a pretty complex interesting story. I really like who they have cast for each of the heroes. My only problem with this movie is going to be the fact that I don’t know if it will play well for the general populace. If I told my non-geeky friends that they should go see a comic book movie that deals with serious topics and is actually a drama I think they would just shake there head. Its a shame that its that way but I feel that this movie may end up being a really good movie that just does not do well. Oh well, even if its only myself and the fans I’m sure I’ll still enjoy it.
The poster is perfect for a release at Comic-Con. I’m sure that 99.9% of the people at the convention will have read the comic book itself and will know just who and what is happening on the poster. It shows tells us they are going to keep the feel and look of the comic and this is a good thing when it comes to the actual fans. Unfortunately it looks like a comic book and I don’t think it communicates the movie well to the non-comic book fans.

I just posted the red band trailer for this movie last night and I think everyone knows just how pumped I am for this movie. It looks so over the top good. Hopefully we haven’t seen all the good parts in the trailers and that it really is as good as its looking to be.
I’m not too big of fan of this poster. It highlights just who the main stars are but something just seems missing. It feels like any other action movie poster from the past year or so. At least it doesn’t really harm my hopes for this movie.

Okay I put these three posters together because I really couldn’t care less about either. If you know something about them feel free to comment and perhaps you will convince me otherwise but as of right now I doubt I’ll bother with any of them.

I’m not sure what to think about Southland Tales. Donnie Darko is an amazing movie that really is getting the cult attention it deserves. Southland Tales was supposed to be out a long time ago and its been redone and cleaned up at least once due to the poor reception its received. Maybe all the reworking has paid off and it will be a good movie. I really hope so.
The poster is different enough to be somewhat cool. It tells us it will be something different and I think thats a good thing, but in the end its going to be another poster that really doesn’t stand out and it will be forgotten.

Everything that has come out so far about Iron Man has been gold. With all the care and attention that seems to be going into it Iron man is no longer just a throw away super hero movie in my mind but has become something I’m actually looking forward to.
I like this straight forward poster for this movie. About the only think I’d change is I’d dumb the fighter jets in the background. Just focus on Iron Man only. Other than that its pretty cool looking.

Here is another comic book movie that really is just for the comic fans and geeks in general. The first movie was really well done and was really entertaining and it should have had a wider reception than it did. Unfortunately Hellboy isn’t Spiderman, Superman or one of the other mainstays of Marvel and DC so once again I’m predicting this will be a good movie that is loved by the fans and ignored by everyone else.
The poster is what it is. It looks like a basic comic book cover. It looks cool and all but I’m looking forward to the posters that come out closer to the release of the movie. I think they can do better.

I don’t know what it is, I like horror movies but I just don’t get hyped up for them and neither the poster or the movie itself really has me caring right now. I’ll probably end up seeing it eventually if the reviews are okay but other than that I’m a big meh whatever for this.

I’ve saved the best for last, both posterwise and movie wise. I can’t help but get goosebumps thinking about Indiana Jones returning. I actually ended up in first Archaeology and then Classics (Greek and Roman studies) because of these movies. There is just something wonderful about each of the them so far. I am trying to temper my hopes for Indiana Jones 4 but I’ll admit they are pretty high right now.
Both of these posters are just about perfect. The first reminds you of all the classic shots from the previous movies and the second poster draws us in with just his hat, whip and a crate. It almost got me wondering if they are going to bring the Ark back out of the crate in this movie. I seriously doubt they will but it got me thinking about it and that is a good thing.

oops I totally forgot to put the new poster up for Saw IV. Truthfully though its nowhere near as interesting as the head in a scale poster previously shown. And I quit watching the Saw series after number 2.
