Weekly DVD Pick - Needful Things
First off, I just have to say there is no way in hell that I would pick the Hills Have Eyes 2 as the Weekly DVD Pick. I hated the remake of the first one and the second one looks even worse.
Okay now that I’ve said that I’ll have to admit that it is another pretty bleak week for DVD releases. So I decided to hit the vault once again and see if there is something that I think is worth watching that everyone hasn’t seen. I had a couple of ideas but the DVD I picked isn’t one of them. Just after I had chosen my movie I listened to the firstshowing.net Hypecast. Their director profile for the week was Stephen King. Now generally I don’t like most Stephen King movies. I don’t know if I would like the books or not but for the movies I find they almost always end poorly. There are a few exceptions but overall the endings generally disappoint. So, anyways they mentioned many of the King movies but they left out one that I actually do like, that movie is Needful Things. I’m pretty sure the main reason I like the movie is due to the fact that they use In The Hall of the Mountain King. I love that piece of music.
The movie revolves around the Devil coming to a small town and causing chaos by getting the townfolk to do little things against each other in exchange for gifts. The movie just like the song starts of slow and builds and builds till it all comes crashing down.
If you haven’t seen it check it out at the local DVD shop

Ugh! NO! I listened to they hypecast too and one guy called in and mentioned this (maybe it was you) and I just yelled at the speakers, NO! That movie is awful! One of the worst I’ve seen in a theater.
I’m sure partly because I read the book first and the book is fantastic. It’s also about a million pages long and super in depth with WAY more characters and then this 90 minute film comes along and butchers the whole thing to almost unrecognizable proportions.
I highly recommend the book, you’ll either hate the movie then or maybe appreciate it more because there are small details in the movie that pay homage to the written word (like the lady with the sunglasses - she is integral part of the book).
Anyway, I hated this movie. - sorry.

I’ve never read the book so I don’t have the bias against it. I pretty much get really ticked at most Stephen King movies. They never end well. The only exceptions are The Shining and Needful Things.
I’ll give you that it has been years since I’ve seen it but I really did enjoy the movie.
Part of a big reason why I like Needful Things really is the score. In The Hall of the Mountain King is my favourite classical piece.
I think this is going to one of those movies we’ll just have to disagree on.
