Weekly DVD Pick - The Page Turner

The Page TurnerI thought it was going to be another dry week for DVDs. I thought about picking the Last Mimzy but decided I just wasn’t really interested. So I did some browsing around and I discovered that the French thriller The Page Turner is being released on DVD this week. It took me a few minutes to remember just where I had heard about this movie. Kurt from the Movie Patron Cinecast and Twitchfilm had it as one of his weekly screenings. I’m going to see if I can follow his lead on this one since I generally like thrillers and I often enjoy the slow burn feeling of French thrillers even more.

Here is just what Kurt had to say about it for his screening:

The film adds a menacing layer to the simple act of trusting someone. It underscores the need for acceptance and praise from peers and teachers. Furthermore, how it takes so many people to do even the simplest of things, and if one chooses not to play their role, the entire social fabric can easily unravel. Things could have easily degenerated into trash like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle or Ricochet, but director Denis Dercourt instead choses to highlight the body language of two fantastic and subtle actresses, young and well groomed Déborah François and elder and dignified Catherine Frot. One character has a reason to hate the other, but you are never sure whether or not that hatred will be acted upon. Watch the hands and the eyes of these two women and you will see the film.

Our Partners

Row Three is a collaborative film website that aims to foster discussion and community for those who like their cinema a bit Hollywood, a bit indie and a bit foreign. Formed and run by a collective of writers who try to stray from summer blockbusters and the so-called "popcorn" flicks in favor of a bit more upscale fare. We are not always successful in this endeavor; nonetheless we all love to talk movies and we hope to build a place for everyone to join in on the conversation.
