Writer(s):

Director(s):
Zack Snyder
Actor(s):

Synopsis:
Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings Miller’s (Sin City) acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient historic tale.
Reason for wanting to see it:
There are several reasons why I’ve included this as a movie I want to see in 2007. I really enjoy historical war movies. I’ve never read the graphic novel so I’m not too sure how close it will actually stick to the real events but no matter what the true story is a great basis for a movie. My final reason for wanting to catch this is that is simply looks incredibly cool. I love the look. While I wasn’t amazed with Sin City for the plot I was amazed by the look. This movie is once again worth watching simply for the look and feel.

I’ve given myself some time to think about 300 now that I’ve seen it. There are two ways I can look at it. First it is a beautiful movie to look at. I think I’ll be able to watch bits and pieces of this movie over and over again. Truthfully, I was stunned by the beauty of the scene with the oracle scene. 300 is truly a work of art in addition to being a piece of entertainment. Unfortunately, it fell a bit flat with me on the entertainment level. This may have happened because I had a good idea of each of the battle scenes that were coming and how each of them was going to end. For me it came down to the fact that the movie felt somewhat like and extended music video. It was just one cool scene after another without creating an emotional impact on me.
I don’t want to give the impression that I did not like this movie. It was truly impressive to watch its more just that I felt the story was a bit to basic and that the trailers had showed so much of the parts that I would have made me fall in love with 300 if I first saw them during the movie instead of months before. I will buy 300 when it comes out on DVD simply so I can watch how beautiful the movie is but it won’t be one that I watch over and over again for the story. I’d give it a respectable 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
